A young mother sold her 18-month-old son for 5,000 yuan (S$981.91). The reason? To buy a bus ticket to meet her lover.

The woman, in her 20s, ran away with the son Xiao Feng from their home in Minhou (of China's Fujian province) after a heated argument with her live-in lover, last month.

She took a bus to the nearby Fuzhou city and stayed at a hotel for three nights.

When she had finished the 600 yuan (S$117.80) she took from home, the mother – known only as Chen – decided to visit another lover in the Zhejiang province, according to Fuzhou Daily.

At the bus station, Chen found out that the ticket to her boyfriend's place some 800km away was more than she could afford. In a desperate attempt to raise the 250 yuan (S$49.09) fare, she decided to sell Xiao Feng.

She sought help from a luggage handler at the bus station and was introduced to a couple working for a bus company – Zhang and his wife Li.

With help from the trio, Chen sold the boy to a family for 5,000 yuan (S$981.91) on 10th October.

With the money, Chen bought new clothes, a smartphone and a bus ticket to meet her lover. She has lived with him since.

A police officer hands over Xiao Feng to his father
Chen had met Xiao Feng's father, identified only as Xu, four years ago. The pair lived together but did not get married even after the birth of the boy in May, last year.

Xu lodged a police report after Chen told that she had sold their son.

Police arrested Chen as well as the middlemen in a series of operations. Li confessed that the boy was sold to her handicapped brother, who is a bachelor but wished to adopt a child.

Xiao Feng reunited with his father early this month.
