Sebastian Vettel rode a heart-stopping rollercoaster of a Brazilian Grand Prix en route to becoming the youngest three-time Formula 1 world champion yesterday (this morning, Singapore time).

The 25-year-old did what he needed to finish sixth and barely edge out Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, the only other driver contending for the title, to the title by three points.

The incident-filled, rain-affected race at Interlagos proved to be one of the most dramatic in the sport's history as the destiny of the title swung one way and then the other between Red Bull star and Alonso.

The 31-year-old Spaniard had a superb start on a hectic first lap at Interlagos but could do no better than second, which was not enough to erase Vettel's lead in the standings.

McLaren's Jenson Button won the 71-lap race, which finished behind the safety car after Force India's Paul Di Resta crashed with just over a lap to go.

Mercedes' Michael Schumacher, F1's most successful driver, finished seventh in his final race after 19 seasons.
