The panda names Kai Kai and Jia Jia have been trademarked by Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) to prevent others from cashing in.
Trademarks for a set of illustrations representing the two bears are currently being processed. WRS, which owns the River Safari where the pandas are housed, declined to say how much it paid for the trademarks.
Both trademarks will cover more than 2,000 products - including T-shirts, mugs and plush toys - which WRS has commissioned to mark the panda exhibit here.
This means that, other than WRS, or those given permission by it, no one can use the name Kai Kai or Jia Jia in connection with pandas, or the panda illustrations. For example, the names Kai Kai and Jia Jia cannot be printed on generic panda toys meant for sale, and the illustrations cannot be used on items like T-shirts.
