More people have been hauled up for illegal parking while a trial using closed-circuit TV cameras to nab and deter offenders will be extended.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said an average of 35,000 summonses were issued a month from January to August this year, compared with 25,000 a month last year. This represents a spike of 40 per cent, with the LTA linking this to higher public feedback about parking violations.

As part of its bid to curb illegal parking, the LTA has extended a six-month trial - which is supposed to conclude in July - that uses CCTV cameras. They were set up along Beach Road near Golden Mile Complex and a road beside Parkway Parade in Marine Parade.

Its spokesman said the trial has shown "positive" results. The cameras are more effective than traffic wardens due to their ability to conduct continuous surveillance, she added.

The LTA also depends on traffic wardens, auxiliary police officers and its own officers to enforce parking regulations and is also studying expanding the camera system to other locations.

Owners of light vehicles face a fine of up to $120 for parking illegally. Owners of heavy vehicles can be fined up to $150. Certain offences carry demerit points too.
