Marathon runners from all over the world gathered in Singapore for a race, which is definitely not for the faint-hearted -- the HomeTeamNS New Balance REAL Run 2012.

The runners hailed from countries as diverse as Kenya and New Zealand.

The race around the Changi Exhibition Centre started off on this easy-going tarmac road, but continued on to beach sand, and even a muddy forest trail. It is not your ordinary marathon because for each type of terrain, the runners had to vary their strides and apply different techniques.

Topping the Men's Open category was Bernard Mwendia Muthoni, a Kenyan who completed the 21km run in 1:05:34.

Organised by HomeTeamNS, an association for the Police and Civil Defence Nsmen, the race included a lighter 10km category.
