A New York man was subdued by Taser early Monday morning after trying to escape arrest by taking a Portland police officer's holstered gun, city police said.

Fitzgerald Carryl, 30, was charged with assault on a police officer and aggravated reckless conduct for his alleged actions, which took place while he was being taken into custody on a gun charge.
With the help of a police dog, Lt. Clifford Strout allegedly discovered a loaded .45-caliber handgun in the gray 2002 Acura that Carryl and Kaemar Wilson, 27, of New York were in during a traffic stop around 12:30 a.m. Monday, a police announcement stated. The police report does not say which man was driving.

Background checks revealed that both men are convicted felons, and therefore prohibited from carrying guns, according to police. Both were arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.

Wilson was later charged with armed robbery for his alleged role in a pair of home invasions that police say took place Sunday morning.

While being taken into custody, Carryl allegedly attempted to take the arresting officer's service weapon from its holster, and was then subdued by Taser, the police department release states.
