Malaysia to beef up community policing

Teachers, doctors, businessmen would be among those to be trained as Malaysia's police volunteers, as the authorities try to allay rising concerns about crime in the country.

The police volunteer reserve (PVR) is to be tripled from 5,000 to 15,000 people, police chief Tan Sri Ismail Omar was quoted as saying in The Star newspaper on Friday.

At the same time, police will soon launch a separate recruitment exercise to boost the numbers of the men in blue. The police force is some 122,000-strong today.

The move followed alarm raised by many Malaysians at recent reports of snatch thefs in mall carparks and attempted kidnappings that have led the authorities to promise crime reduction as a key government target.
