Singapore's new data protection bill was passed in Parliament today.

The proposed bill by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (Mica) protects personal information from being stolen or indiscriminately collected and used for marketing purposes.

The bill has gone through three rounds of public consultation since last September. It is set to become law early next year (2013), with enforcement slated to begin 18 months later (mid 2014), to give companies time to adjust.

The Do-Not-Call (DNC) registry, which will allow people to opt out of receiving intrusive marketing messages, could be launched by early 2014.
