A Russian plane en route to Moscow had to divert to Ukraine's second largest city, Kharkiv, when a passenger on board gave birth mid-flight.

Aeroflot said its cabin crew helped to deliver the baby on Thursday with the help of a nurse who on board.

The plane was bound for Moscow from the Ukrainian city of Simferopol, reported Bloomberg.

The birth was the first for the carrier on this route since a boy was born in Sept 2005 on a Moscow-Los Angeles flight.

The airline said in an e-mail statement that the woman was 29 to 30 weeks pregnant when she boarded the flight. That means, she was not in violation of air travel regulations, Kharkiv airport said in a statement on its website.

"The young mother and newborn were conscious when the plane landed and were taken to a local perinatal centre," the airport's said.

The mother and the girl, who weighed 1.05 kilograms, are in "satisfactory condition", according to the statement.

AsiaOne understands that most airlines will not allow pregnant women to travel if they are into the third trimester or after 34 weeks. Between 28-36 weeks, airlines may permit pregnant women to fly if they have a doctor's letter certifying that they are fit for travel.
