Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan has successfully raised the $30,000 needed to annual his bankruptcy, said the party’s website.
In a blog post put up on Monday, it said that he had raised the sum in 10 days through sales of his book and private donations.
It added that Dr Chee will be remitting the money to the Official Assignee this week, whereupon his creditors – former prime ministers, Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Goh Chok Tong, and the Attorney-General’s Chambers – will take a formal vote to accept the amount.
Dr Chee was declared a bankrupt in 2006 after he failed to pay $500,000 in damages to Mr Goh and Mr Lee for defaming them during the 2001 General Election.
In July, Dr Chee made an an offer to pay $30,000 to settle his debt, which was accepted by Mr Lee and Mr Goh.
