The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is augmenting search efforts for missing full-time National Serviceman Lance-Corporal (LCP) Muhammad Fahrurrazi Bin Salim with a team led by Commander Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Brigadier General Lim Hock Yu, who is overall in charge of the search operations.

The search and rescue operation has continued throughout the night and are ongoing, said the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) today.

More than 250 troops from both the SAF and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), together with 16 SAF and RBAF naval divers, are currently involved in the operation. They are supported by nine SAF and four RBAF boats, along with three RSAF Super Puma helicopters.

LCP Fahrurrazi's parents and younger sister are currently in Brunei, accompanied by SAF family liaison officers. The SAF is currently rendering the necessary assistance to the serviceman's family, said the ministry.

LCP Fahrurrazi, 20, was reported missing in the Temburong training area yesterday. He was the coxswain in a convoy of four boats providing safety coverage for the water crossing segment of a jungle training exercise. Mindef said it was daylight during the incident with clear weather and water conditions were calm, and that an investigation has been initiated.

At a press conference this afternoon, Mindef said LCP Fahrurrazi is known to be a swimmer and was qualified to operate the boat, and has participated in about 10 similar operations.

The ministry also said this was the first time such an incident has happened. Asked how long the operations would be carried out for, Chief of Staff (general operations) Brigadier General Tung Yui Fai said: "We're sparing no efforts now to conduct the search and will take decisions as it comes."
