Large crowds are expected at the Geylang Serai Hari Raya Bazaar on 18 August 2012, the eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Police would like to advise the public to remain vigilant against crime as they go about shopping and celebrating the festive season.
The public should note the following crime prevention tips:
- Never leave your handbag, wallet or mobile phone unattended in public places such as on a table at eateries or in a shopping trolley;
- Do not be distracted by strangers creating a commotion or accidentally bumping/spilling something onto you;
- Avoid carrying large amount of cash with you;
- Do not adorn your children with excessive jewellery as they are easy targets for potential criminals; and
- Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket and always remember to sling your handbag in front of you and ensure that it is fastened or zipped at all times.
The large crowd also provides criminals with an opportune time to commit molest. Recently, there have been a few cases of outrage of modesty reported in the vicinity of Geylang Serai Bazaar. The public can minimize opportunities for criminals to commit outrage of modesty by following these tips:
- Be alert to your surroundings. When possible, move away if someone stands or sits exceptionally close to you;
- If you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to the nearest open business premise, crowded area or call the Police to seek help;
- Stay close to your friends or move around in groups when in crowded places; and
- If you are molested, call for help immediately by shouting or seek help from people nearby to increase the chances of apprehending the culprit. Call ‘999’ as soon as possible.
Heavy vehicular traffic is also expected along Changi Road and Sims Ave from 6.00 pm on 18 August 2012 to 4.00 am on 19 August 2012. Motorists are advised to avoid the affected roads, make alternative travel arrangements and drive with caution.
Auxiliary police officers will be deployed at all affected road junctions to regulate traffic and assist motorists. Illegal parking along the main and arterial roads will be strictly enforced. Vehicles found parking indiscriminately or causing obstruction will be towed away.
