Toh Chun Siong is the second man to be convicted of giving false information to the police by implicating a man for a serious crime he did not commit.

The 28-year-old is currently serving 5 1/2 years' jail for culpable homicide of 18-year-old Wong Dao Jing on Feb 15, 2003.

The Straits Times reported that he admitted to falsely implicating Larry Lim Liang Long, 32, to have involvement in the assault of the polytechnic student, who died shortly after, at Lucky Chinatown.

Toh and four accomplices, including Leong Soon Kheong, 37, were involved in the case, reported The Straits Times.

To evade arrest after the attack, four of them fled to Malaysia, leaving a man nicknamed Ka Juak, in Singapore.

On Feb 16, the four met with Lim in Johor Bahru and it was agreed that Lim would take the rap for Ka Juak for the homicide to protect the latter's true identity.

Lim was on the run for copyright infringement offences.

He surrendered himself to the police in March this year and was charged with the Chinatown murder.

However, he was later given a discharge amounting to an acquittal. He is being dealt with for other charges.

Leong, who is also in jail for culpable homicide, was given 30 months jail for perverting the course of justice and giving false information.

Toh was sentenced to 18 months' jail for the two offences on Wednesday.

His sentence will start after his expected date of release in April 2014.
