She would hop on taxis but not pay the fare, and Tanya Azurre Lee did this at least 34 times. On Tuesday, the 29-year-old was fined a total of $1,200 after pleading guilty to two counts of fare evasion. The unemployed woman had been allowed to settle the fares on the other 32 occasions.

The traffic court heard that at 3.30pm on April 15, 2011, she flagged down a taxi near her home in Whampoa Drive for the trip to Woodlands Avenue 7.

Once there, she said she could not pay the fare of $17.80 and offered to go up to her relative's flat for the money. The cabby threatened to drive her to the police station instead.

Lee then handed over her identity card and took down the cabby's cell phone number, promising to settle the fare on the next day. However, she did not do so and the cabby, who still had her identity card, made a police report on April 18, 2011.
