The secondary school student was on her way home on a packed SBS Transit bus 88 when she witnessed a heated argument between two commuters fighting over a seat.

Joelle Chew, 17, who studies in CHIJ Secondary School (Toa Payoh), recalled the incident, which occurred about three months ago.

She said: "One aunty was staring at the other aunty for a while and they started scolding each other loudly.

"Everyone in the bus was looking at them."

The quarrel ended only when one of them alighted.

It turns out that such exchanges are on the rise on our public transport.

Latest statistics from SBS Transit revealed that disputes between passengers on SBS buses have risen by 68 per cent in the last two years.

Arguments and fights on public transport here have been in the spotlight recently, with more commuters filming the conflicts on their mobile phones.

Said National University of Singapore sociologist Tan Ern Ser: "Such incidents have become more visible, given the easy availability of phone cameras as well as the possibility of such postings going viral."

He said that overcrowding could be a possible reason for the rise in disputes on public transport.
