Police have arrested a 23-year-old Bangladesh national for committing snatch theft in Yishun Estate with the assistance from two members of public.

On 2 July 2012 at about 10.10pm , a 29-year-old female victim was walking home along Yishun Central towards Yishun Avenue 11 when an unknown male suspect came from her rear and attempted to snatch her hand phone away.

The victim put up a struggle and this was witnessed by two members of public, Mr Kumaran PV Malai and Mr Kumarasamy s/o Selvarajoo, aged 41 and 42 respectively, who were travelling in a vehicle along Yishun Central.

The two members of the public saw the suspect snatching away the victim’s hand phone and fleeing towards Yishun Central, through the open field opposite Northpoint Shopping Centre. Without hesitation, the two members of the public gave chase.

They eventually detained the suspect at the open field in front of Northpoint Shopping Centre. Upon police arrival, the duo handed the suspect to Police. The victim’s stolen hand phone valued about $800 was recovered from his possession and seized as case exhibits.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 4 July 2012 for an offence of Snatch Theft under Section 356 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 7 years and shall be liable to caning.
