Olympics: Japan's double quest starts with win over Canada
Japan's women footballers began their bid to hold both the World Cup and Olympic titles at the same time by opening their 2012 Games campaign with a 2-1 win over Canada on Wednesday.

Goals from Nahomi Kawasumi and captain Aya Miyama gave Japan, shock World Cup final winners on penalties over the United States in Germany last year, a 2-0 lead at half-time.

But Melissa Tancredi pulled a goal back for Canada early in the second half of this Group F fixture.

Olympics: US fightback stuns France in women's football
An entertaining first half saw France race into a 2-0 lead after just 15 minutes, Gaetane Thiney firing Les Bleus ahead with a long-range effort that left USA keeper Hope Solo groping at thin air.

Moments later Marie-Laure Delie made it 2-0, capitalising on hesitant USA defending before bludgeoning in from eight yards to leave the Americans reeling.

Slowly but surely however the physical superiority of the American women began to tell and they were thrown a lifeline when Wambach pulled a goal back from a set piece.

Olympics: British women get Games off to winning start
Great Britain, playing their first ever Olympic women's football match, got the London Games off to a winning start in Wales on Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over New Zealand.

Two days before the Olympics officially open in the capital, Arsenal Ladies defender Stephanie Houghton scored the only goal of the game with a neatly-executed free-kick after 64 minutes.

Olympics: Cristiane sets goal record as Brazil hit five
Brazil striker Cristiane became the most successful goalscorer in Olympic women's football history on Wednesday as the South Americans opened their 2012 campaign with a 5-0 thumping of Cameroon.

Cristiane grabbed the fourth goal late in the second half at the Millennium Stadium.

It was her 11th Olympic goal, meaning she is now the all-time leading scorer in women's Olympic football, overtaking Birgit Prinz of Germany.
