A Lumberton police officer was shot and killed Tuesday morning while trying to apprehend a suspect.

The shooting happened around 11 a.m. outside of a gas station at 5030 North Fayetteville Road. Lumberton Police Chief Michael McNeil identified the officer as Jeremiah Goodson. He was off duty at the time when he recognized the suspect as being wanted for a homicide.

Goodson called police and notified other officers about the suspect’s location. When a second officer arrived on the scene, the two began to approach the car the suspect was sitting in. The suspect began shooting from inside the car, hitting Goodson in the chest.

McNeil says a suspect is in custody, but he could not release further details since the incident remains under investigation.

Goodson was a gang officer and served with the Lumberton Police Department for six years. He is only the second officer in Lumberton history to be killed in the line of duty.

Goodson is survived by his expectant wife and one child.
