Preschool teachers who are poor in English will be getting help from the labour movement to improve their command of the language.

For a start, the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) will help 350 preschool teachers pay for lessons to prepare them for an English test they must pass if they want to continue teaching kindergarten classes, and earn higher pay.

These candidates currently do not have at least a B4 grade in English at the GCE O-level examination, and would have to stop teaching when a new minimum English grade rule kicks in next January.

The NTUC will provide subsidies as high as $1,200 to help applicants attend English classes and take an exam conducted by the British Council.
