More young people are crying out for help and engaging in self-harming behaviour, says crisis help support group Samaritans of Singapore.

SOS reports that 774 people -- a 47 per cent surge -- used its email befriending service in 2011-2012, compared to the previous year.

Of this group, 70.1 per cent disclosed their age was below 30.

Most of the problems presented in the emails by those below 30 consisted of relationship problems, while depression and other mental health issues were a close second.

Many of those in this age group also reported engaging in self-harm, through cutting, biting, hitting and burning amongst others.

The number of emails SOS has received has also jumped by more than 67 per cent during the same time period.

56 per cent of the close to 3, 700 emails contained some sort of suicide ideation.
SOS said the numbers show that there's a growing demand for its email service, as compared to the traditional suicide hotline, as there are many who prefer writing to talking.

Writing down their thoughts and concerns over email is a more convenient and flexibile method of communication which offers a sense of control and privacy to its users, said SOS.

As in previous years, more young people also prefer to use this method of communication, which appeals to the younger, more internet-savvy generation.

People who are feeling trouble or distressed can email SOS at pat@samaritans.org.sg .

The public can also call the 24-hour SOS hotline at 1800-221-444 if they need to speak to someone.
