National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan has defended National Parks Board's (NParks) decision to purchase the Brompton foldable bikes for its officers.

The purchase of the 26 bikes, each costing $2,200, has raised eyebrows, with some wondering why such a costly bike was purchased in the first place.

On Wednesday morning, the Minister noted in a blog entry that he had checked with NParks and found that productivity was a key consideration behind the purchase.

An NParks officer in the Park Connector Division covers up to 40km on his rounds daily.
