A three-year old girl was found to have three kidneys according to a report by Lianhe Wanbao. Doctors discovered this when her father brought her to the hospital after seeing a large amount of blood in her nappy.

Medical examinations showed that one of her kidneys actually comprised of two ‘kidneys’, which was causing severe problems to her spine.

According to Dr Ye De Lu from KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Jia En was born with a duplex right kidney, meaning that the kidney has two ureters. This makes it appear like there are two kidneys. To make matter worse, the girl’s upper ureter was obstructed by the bladder.

Dr Ye said that this kind of abnormally is very uncommon, with an incident rate of only 0.5-1 per cent. He said that the girl is now awaiting reconstructive surgery to connect the duplex kidney to the bladder.

The girl’s father, 36 year-old goods handler Jiang Guo Qiang, said that little Jiang Jia En has had health complications since birth. She has already undergone numerous surgeries, and requires a daily intake of three to four types of painkillers and antibiotics.

For instance, the girl suffers from congenital scoliosis and has not been able to sit up straight since the age of six months. She has undergone surgeries to try and correct this condition, which have left numerous scars on her back. According to the girl’s doctor, Dr Lin Wen Liang, her spine is curved in an S-shape, with the majority of the bend in her chest area. In addition, her spine is fused with her ribs and other bones in numerous locations, restricting her organ growth. Dr Lin also said the girl only has 70 percent of the lung capacity of a healthy child.

Two Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Ribs (VETPR) have been inserted into her body to rectify her crooked spine. Since August 2010, only three patients have undergone this procedure. The length of the titanium rib needs to be adjusted surgically every half a year in proportion with the girl’s growth. This will continue until the girl is 12 years old and her bones are set.

Due to the risk of the titanium ribs puncturing her body, the little girl’s movements are restricted. She cannot engage in physical play. There is also almost no furniture at home that she could climb on, and she doesn’t go to the playground. In order to keep her safe, her mother also accompanies the girl to child care every day and stays there with her the whole time.
