As Senior Station Inspector in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Choy Ah Kiong was required to record all of his interactions with persons of doubtful repute.

However, he failed to do so twice.

In 2008, when he travelled to Shenzhen with brothel keeper Tan Yew Siong and a female friend from Jan 11 to 14, 2008, his entry in his police pocket book only indicated: '11-01-08 to 14-01-08 on overseas leave', reported The Straits Times.

In 2009, the 51-year-old again went to China with Tan and two other men, logging the trip in his pocket book merely as: '27-02-09 Friday. On leave in China till 05-03-09.'

Choy, who had joined the police force in 1979, was posted to the CID's special investigation section in 1990. While part of this section, he met Tan, who was then a driver for prostitutes. Tan later became a brothel operator in 2007.

The former policeman was fined $800 on Thursday by the district court for failing to state accurately his two trips to China. He had pleaded guilty to flouting the Police General Order requiring him to record his interactions.

The paper reported that his lawyer, Subhas Anandan, pleaded for leniency for Choy, saying during his 31 years with the police force, he had served it with distinction and had received numerous awards and commendations.
