Teenage midfielder Gael Bigirimana has become Alan Pardew's latest summer capture after sealing a move from Coventry.
The Burundi-born 18-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee, which it is understood could amount to around £1million.
The player, along with his father, two brothers and sister, followed his mother to England as the family escaped their war-torn homeland.
While walking to a supermarket to buy milk as an 11-year-old, Bigirimana had presented himself at Coventry's Academy training ground and asked for a trial.
Bigirimana made 28 senior appearances for Coventry last season, 16 of them npower Championship starts.
