The Singapore National Under-22 Squad suffered their first defeat of the AFC Under-22 Qualifiers campaign to Japan, succumbing 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Riau Main Stadium.
The Japanese proved too strong for the Young Lions though there were glimpses of brilliance by the Singapore side in the 90 minutes.
Japan U22 opened the score in the 14th minute when a free-kick was headed Singapore defender Delwinder Singh into his own net. Japan added one more to their tally five minutes later when No 25, Watari, volleyed the ball home.
The Young Lions' first real chance came in the 55th minute when Faris Ramli stole the ball from a Japanese defender, but his shot went straight to the goalkeeper.
The Japanese added a third goal courtesy of Notsuda Gatuko's header.
Singapore grabbed a late consolation goal through substitute Shamil Sharif, who pounced on a rebound.
