According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have entered the race to sign Newcastle target Mathieu Debuchy.

The French international has long been a transfer target of the Magpies, but it now appears likely he will follow former Lille team-mate Eden Hazard to Stamford Bridge.

After watching Debuchy in Les Bleus' first two group games at Euro 2012, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has decided that he wishes to make the full-back a part of his new-look squad.

The right side of defence was a constant source of worry for Chelsea during the previous Premier League season. As Jose Bosingwa has since been released from the club's books and Branislav Ivanovic prefers to play in central defence, Debuchy is expected to face little competition for a starting position.

Chelsea were previously linked with a move for Ajax's Gregory van der Wiel, but the Dutchman is believed to be pursued by a host of European clubs.
