Malaysian trialist Nazmi Faiz is currently on a two-week trial with Beira-Mar, who recently finished 12th in the Portuguese 2011/12 Liga campaign, and will be looking to impress coach Ulisses Morais over the next four days, according to club media officer Lues Vega.
“He will be training with the first team on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,” Vega told ESPNSTAR.com in an exclusive interview.
“There will also be a friendly on Saturday with a Portuguese second-division team and Ulisses Morais, the head coach, will be watching him.”
Vega also revealed that Beira-Mar had conducted extensive research on the 17-year-old midfielder before offering him a trial, and believe he has what it takes to succeed at the club.
“We saw some videos of him in action,” he added. “We also had good information from his agent and another one of our trusted sources who know him.
“We finally compared it with news about him and referenced it with media reports in Asia and came to a good conclusion.
“We believe that he will impress the coach and it’s hoped that he will be the first Malaysian player to play in Portugal. This is our expectation.
“We will probably decide [on his future] after the match on Saturday.”
The one thing Nazmi has in his favour is his relative youth, as he will be eligible to play for Beira-Mar’s youth side even if he is deemed not ready for first-team action.
“Beira-Mar has two teams; the under-19s and the professional team and Nazmi would be one of the few players who would be able to play for both should he impress sufficiently,” Vega explained.
“He is only 17 and we know that it’s possible he might need some time to grow up before being able to show his ability and realise his full potential.”
Before Beira-Mar offered him the trial, Nazmi was plying his trade with Harimau Muda in the Great Eastern-YEO’s S.League and has already received the backing of his coach Ong Kim Swee that he has what it takes to succeed in Europe.
