S'pore cheerleaders eyeing gold in Tokyo competition

Singapore will be taking part in the Cheerleading Asia International Open Championships in Tokyo later this month.

It will be the second time Singapore is taking part in the competition, but the competitors going there will be from the newly-formed national cheerleading team.

Singapore finished second in the mixed stunts category last year. Team Lions hope to bring home the gold this time round.

The team has proven it is the best on the local stage at this year's National Cheerleading Championships.

Now, preparations are under way for these top cheerleaders to compete in the international arena.

They will be up against powerhouse Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Taiwan.

Team Lions members come from four schools and institutions of higher learning.

The team's head coach, Ong Wei Cheng, is confident the group will do well in the 19-20 May competition.

Team Lions will compete on both days of the competition, where their points will be added up to determine the final winner.
