Parties ramp up battle for Hougang with campaign taking on momentum
'They insisted on democracy and insisted that Parliament must have different voices. This spirit is special to Hougang... Hougang needs an MP who dares to say, dares to act, dares to bear responsibility. Only then can he match up to Hougang residents? spirit!' - Workers' Party chief Low Thia Khiang

'The voters in Hougang should consider carefully - not blindly, but carefully - who is the best candidate who can represent them well, who will work best for them and has the strongest backing who will look after them. I think that is the way democracy is meant to work.' - PM Lee Hsien Loong

Png Eng Huat’s speech at first WP Election Rally for Hougang By-election
For the past 20 years, you, the residents of Hougang have stood shoulder to shoulder with the Workers’ Party. You have given the Workers’ Party your wholehearted support. I want to thank each and every one of you tonight before I start my speech.

Png Eng Huat: Hougang is Not for Sale!
“Hougang is not for sale!” Mr Png Eng Huat declared. In his maiden rally of the Hougang by-election, this is the battle cry of the Workers’ Party (WP) as it kicks off its campaign for Hougang in earnest.

Expelling Yaw 'took courage', said WP chief Low
Mr Low, who was Hougang MP for 20 years until last year, said the party had to be responsible to voters even if it meant sacking his former protege.

Hougang by-election not just a local election: WP
Many problems faced by Hougang residents are national issues, said the party's speakers at an election rally on Saturday. The issues include the widening income gap, support for young families, job prospects and the rising cost of living.

Will WP still serve Hougang if it loses, asks Desmond Choo
Turning the tables on the Workers' Party (WP) - which suggested at its rally on Saturday that the People's Action Party (PAP) candidate Desmond Choo would still be around even if he loses the election - Mr Choo yesterday questioned whether the WP would continue its work in Hougang if its candidate Png Eng Huat were to lose the election.

'Is Png Eng Huat WP's best man?', asks Teo Chee Hean
'I think the voters have a right to ask why the WP did not send Mr Png to Parliament, but now want the voters of Hougang to send him to Parliament. Is Hougang so special that the WP is sending you a candidate that the WP themselves decided not to sent to Parliament when they had a chance?'

DPM Teo questions if Hougang voters being taken for granted
Mr Teo explained that when the WP had to choose one member from their East Coast GRC team to send to Parliament as a Non-Constituency MP, they did not choose Mr Png.

"If he was their best man, why didn't they choose him?" Mr Teo asked.

WP flip-flopped on national issues: DPM Teo
He said: "The WP had previously argued for less foreign workers, but in the recent Budget debate in Parliament, it suddenly changed its mind. The WP now says we should not reduce foreign workers in several major sectors, major industries."

Mr Teo also noted that the WP had spoken "loudly and fiercely" on ministerial salaries at the election rallies just last year. "But in Parliament this year, they quietly abandoned their position. They gave up their previous drastic proposals, they didn't explain why," he said.

Hougang by-election: Rallies planned by WP
Workers' Party by-election rallies are planned on Saturday 19 May, Tuesday 22 May and Thursday 24 May.

The rallies will begin at 7pm and will take place either at the Open Field next to Blk 837 Hougang Central OR Hougang Stadium.
