The Community Policing System (COPS) was launched this morning at Tampines by Second Minister for Home Affairs, Mr S Iswaran.
Each Neighbourhood Police Centre will set up a new Crime Strike Force Unit to make crime fighting more effective in the community.
An expanded Community Policing Unit will also see police officers build closer relations with residents through foot and bicycle patrols, and engage them in more community programmes.
Police will also set up cameras at all HDB blocks and multi-storey carparks to deter crime and aid in investigations. Police are also using technology to enhance Neighbourhood Police Posts to better serve the community with round-the-clock access to police services.
Bukit Merah East and Tampines NPC are the first two NPCs to be re-organised under the new system, with six more NPCs to follow in the last quarter of 2012. These are Bishan, Clementi, Sengkang and Woodlands NPCs, as well as the new NPCs in Punggol and Woodlands West.
The island-wide roll out of COPS will take place over the next 4 to 5 years, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
