President Tony Tan Keng Yam issued the writ of election on Wednesday.
Nomination Day for the Hougang by-election to fill former Workers' Party MP Yaw Shin Leong's seat will be on May 16. Serangoon Junior College will be the designated nomination centre.
Polling Day will be held on May 26.
The WP has held Hougang since 1991. The seat became vacant when Mr Yaw was expelled from the party on Feb 14 for refusing to account for alleged extra-marital affairs.
Likely candidate in the by-election is Mr Png Eng Huat, 50, an exectuive committee member who stood for last year's General Election in East Coast GRC, said The Straits Times.
Mr Desmond Choo, 34, is also likely to be fielded by the People's Action Party. He heads the party branch there and will be his second contest in Hougang.
He lost to Mr Yaw last year with 35.2 per cent of the vote.
