Army Half Marathon Cancelled

The SAFRA Singapore Bay Run and Army Half Marathon, a 20-year veteran on the local sporting calendar, will not happen this year.

Netizens and at least one sponsor have said that the race, which enjoys the huge support of the army, will be scrapped this year for organisers to focus on other armed forces events.

The event is believed to have been canned to make way for two other major events – the Army Open House later this month and the 45th anniversary of National Service, which has several events planned this year.

inSing News has yet to receive an email reply from SAFRA and the army, the event’s organisers.

But over the telephone, a SAFRA spokesperson would only say the event was "pending". She did not elaborate.

Some sponsors have also been told of the cancellation of the 26 August event.

Robert Lu, general manager of Key Power International – the event’s running gear partner – said: “They told us it is cancelled and they will issue a press release soon.”

When asked if he has heard that the event will be moved to another date, Mr Lu said: “They will definitely give us a final answer but we have not received word yet.”

Named the Sheares Bridge Run or the Army Half Marathon in earlier editions, the race is popular because it is one of the first – and few – road races that allowed participants to run along the Benjamin Sheares bridge.

The race this year was to have included a father and son category to commemorate 45 years of National Service.

Anthony Sum, who heads local running group Team FatBird, said he would be disappointed if the marquee event was really cancelled.

“There will now be a void in the local race calendar which may not be easily replaced, not in terms of participation or visibility.”
