What do you do if thousands of Singaporeans living abroad are too busy to go home? Well, you bring Singapore to them.
Yesterday, Singapore Day visited New York again, bringing Singapore to Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
The culture-cum-cuisine based event saw Singaporean comedian Hossan Leong as well as Singaporean hawkers flying 15,000 kilometres to Prospect Park to entertain the crowd and cook the dishes respectively.
"I travelled about 4 hours from Boston and we're here to have 'char kway teow' (and) all the other great food that Singapore has," said a participant.
"It doesn't feel like New York ... All the stalls that are set up (here) ... The food, the familiar faces, very Singaporean faces, it feels a lot like home," said another participant.
The sights and sounds at the event struck a chord that is uniquely Singaporean. The real star of the show, however, was the food.
Mr KF Seetoh, a food consultant, said: "When it comes to food ... Singaporeans, certain flavours just resonate ... The sound of, say 'laksa', just tingles ... The thought of this guy making this hand-made fishballs, doing a Peranakan sambal with vinegar ..."
For overseas Singaporeans who could not make the trip to the event yesterday, the good news is that next year's party could be held at a venue closer to them.
