Passengers on North-South MRT train travel in darkness

Commuters aboard an MRT train on the North-South Line were left in the gloom yesterday as they travelled south towards Raffles Place.

Mr Wong, a Stomp contributor who boarded the train at Novena at about 11.15am, told my paper that he was surprised to see the dimly lit train pull into the station.

He said that the lights in most passenger cabins were switched off, with only dim overhead lights left on. He noticed that many passengers were clinging tightly to their seats or to the railings.

Ventilation in the cabins was also poor, although the air-conditioner still seemed to be working, he added.

There was no change in the situation when he alighted at Somerset Station about seven minutes later.

No announcements were made by SMRT staff to inform passengers what the problem was or when it would be resolved, he said.

He took a photograph of the train cabin and posted it on citizen- journalism website Stomp.

YEAH YEAH YEAH
WHATEVER.
When contacted, an SMRT spokesman said that blackouts in its trains are "not common" and are "usually due to human error".

"We can rectify the problem quickly as long as it is reported to our staff. In this case, we did not receive any report," he said.
