Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre CANCELS tsunami watch in Indian Ocean

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has cancelled the tsunami watch for the Indian Ocean at around 8.45pm (11 April)

Earlier, powerful Indonesian earthquakes caused authorities around the region to be on alert for possible tsunamis.

The first tsunami warning was issued by Indonesian authorities following a 8.7 magnitude earthquake that occured off western Aceh at around 4.38pm. Wire agency AP reported that this temblor caused a 80 centimeter-high wave but no serious damage was reported.

A second tsunami warning was declared by Indonesian authorities after a 8.2 magnitude aftershock hit the country's western coast around 7pm.

In its latest update the PTWC in Hawaii said, "Sea level readings now indicate that the threat has diminished or is over for most areas. Therefore the tsunami watch issued by this center is now cancelled.

When no major waves have occurred for at least two hours after the estimated arrival time or damaging waves have not occurred for at least two hours then local authorities can assume the threat is passed."

It also said that, as local conditions can cause a wide variation in tsunami wave action, the all clear determination must be made by local authorities.

Meanwhile, Singapore's National Environment Agency advised the public not to be alarmed.

The agency said it has a “tsunami early warning system” in place and a public advisory will be issued if there is any risk of Singapore being affected.
