More can join social worker conversion programme

The Workforce Development Agency (WDA) said it hopes to train 65 to 70 people a year through its professional conversion programme for social workers.

It was revealed recently that there are currently 800 registered social workers. The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports said at least 200 more are needed, with plans to build 10 new family service centres over the next three years.

The programme has been around since 2009, but only 82 have signed up so far.

One family service centre said employers would need to provide more than a conducive learning environment.

Pasir Ris Family Service Centre executive director Peter Chang said: "For example, in my organisation, we have three staff right now who are undergoing these conversion courses and they are happy. Their fees are being paid for, and they are getting the practical work to substantiate what they learn in the classroom."

For those who have taken up the course, their starting salary would range from S$2,400 to S$2,900.
