LRT train stalls, passengers walk tracks to safety

Eleven passengers of the Bukit Panjang Light Rapid Transit (LRT) found themselves walking the tracks to safety on Sunday after the train they were in stalled.

They were helped by Singapore Civil Defence Force officers as they made their way along a 1.5m-wide emergency walkway in a 150m trek to Senja station.

SMRT put the glitch down to a train fault, which disrupted three services.

The last of the three affected LRT services resumed 21/2 hours later.

The breakdown comes during the first weekend break in the hearings of the Committee of Inquiry (COI) into the major disruptions to the rail service last December.

It is the fifth disruption since Monday. Sunday's trouble on the Bukit Panjang LRT adds to breakdowns that have occurred on the East-West Line and the relatively new Circle Line.

LRT Service A, which starts and ends at Choa Chu Kang station via Senja station, was disrupted between Bukit Panjang and Senja stations at 4.45pm.

This also affected Service C, which departs and terminates at Ten Mile Junction station through Bukit Panjang and Senja stations.

Service B, which runs from Choa Chu Kang station via Petir station, had to be disrupted for nine minutes from 5.11pm, so the 11 passengers from the affected train could walk to Senja.

Passengers on board another disrupted train had to alight at Bukit Panjang station, so the train they were on could be used to push the stalled one.

In a statement, SMRT said its staff arrived and attended to the affected passengers within five minutes.

Air-conditioning and lights within the train remained on throughout.

SMRT said announcements were made at all of Bukit Panjang's LRT stations in the four official languages and via Twitter to keep commuters informed.

Staff were also deployed at affected stations to assist passengers.

On the risk of walking along the emergency walkway, an SMRT spokesman said the walkway was 'safe and is regularly used by staff for maintenance work'.

Service C resumed operations at 5.40pm, and Service A, 21/2 hours later.

SMRT apologised for the inconvenience caused.
