Consumers can look forward to a faster mobile network by 2016, as mobile data traffic looks to grow by leaps and bounds in the next few years.
The Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) will release more spectrum for the next-generation 4G mobile network - which is several times faster and can hold more capacity than the current 3G network - in a move analysts say will ease congested mobile networks in Singapore.
According to IDA deputy chief executive officer Leong Keng Thai, mobile data traffic is growing globally - driven by smartphones and Internet-capable wireless devices - which will "continue to rise very rapidly".
He said: "With 4G technologies, it gives us an opportunity to refresh our wireless infrastructure networks, so that it is optimised and built to cater to this high growth data traffic."
Mobile data traffic in Singapore is projected to grow by 10 times - from 3.1 petabytes a month in 2010 to 37 petabytes a month in 2015.
After the allocation of more capacity to the 4G mobile network, Mr Leong expects "pervasiveness to increase".
