The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) announced that social workers can expect a pay rise of up to 15 per cent.
Funding to the social services sector will be raised by an additional $10 million a year, with effect from July 1, 2012 with a large part of the money going towards the salaries of social service professionals.
The aim of the pay raise is to make salaries of these professionals comparable to their peers in other sectors with similar job scopes.
Also, to improve retention and career progression of social service professionals, the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) will introduce a new Master Social Worker Scheme.
Under this scheme, a group of highly experienced social workers will be appointed to help advance social work practice and mentor senior social workers.
MCYS will also expand training pipelines and offer more scholarships to attract promising candidates to join the sector.
Not forgetting in-service staff, the Government will offer more awards and scholarships to encourage the upgrading or acquiring of new skills in priority areas such as social work, psychology, early intervention support and eldercare.
