Punggol arson suspect arrested

Police have arrested a 33-year-old man believed to be responsible for at least ten cases of arson in Punggol Drive estate.

A spate of arson cases were committed at Blk 305D Punggol Drive in November 2011.

In these cases, the suspect would set fire to newspapers and unwanted papers before throwing them down the central rubbish chute.

Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division studied the crime pattern and conducted extensive follow-up investigations.

Their efforts eventually paid off when officers were able to trace the identity of the suspect and arrested him in the vicinity of Punggol Drive on 13 March.

Preliminary investigations showed the suspect was involved in at least six cases of arson.

Investigations against the suspect are ongoing.

If convicted, the suspect could be jailed up to seven years and fined.
