Central CDC gets S$200,000 from Starhub to help needy children

The Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC) has received a S$200,000 donation from telco StarHub.

The money will go towards the CDC's Nurture Programme, which helps children aged 7 to 12 from low income families.

The programme, launched in 2007, provides children with opportunities to improve their English language proficiency and increase their self-confidence through interactive activities such as story-telling, reading, and music and drama.

For students like 11-year-old Mohamad Fauzi, the Nurture Programme has helped to give them a leg-up in school. Mohamad Fauzi started Primary One in Mayflower Primary School without any prior knowledge of the English language.

He was given additional attention from his teachers due to his poor English grades.

His mother enrolled him in the programme and his grades started improving after he learnt how to read.

Mohamad Fauzi's mother, Sazlinda Aman, found out about the Nurture Programme when she applied for social assistance at Central Singapore CDC. As she could not afford to send her children to tuition classes, she decided to enrol them in the Nurture Programme.

She said: "I've definitely seen an improvement in the results and behaviour of my children. My 10-year-old daughter, Nursyazwani, was a quiet child with borderline grades in school.

"After attending the programme, her school teachers shared that she has improved academically and is also more proactive in helping others. It is really a relief to me that the Nurture Programme has helped my children in their studies," said Madam Sazlinda, who has another 8-year-old daughter Erra Syazlinie enrolled in the programme.

As at end 2011, more than 700 children are enrolled in the programme.
