S-League: Home misfire again, Tampines stunned

Title contenders Home United put on yet another insipid performance last night as Balestier Khalsa pulled off the shock of the season.

With the return of internationals John Wilkinson and Shi Jiayi to the line-up, fans of Home would have expected their team to deliver their first win of the season at Bishan Stadium against a much-changed Gombak side.

But the Bulls took a deserved lead in the 25th minute through Mustaqim Manzur, who spotted Home goalkeeper Lionel Lewis too far off his line and duly sent the ball past the custodian from 25 metres out.

Home fought back in the second half but were thwarted time and again by Gombak goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam.

Just when it looked as if the Bulls would pull off a famous victory, Home's Franklin Anzite latched on to a long clearance and fired home the equaliser six minutes from time.

Even then, Gombak could have snatched the game at the death but Mustaqim's lobbed effort bounced off the crossbar.

For a second straight game, Home United coach Lee Lim Saeng cut a forlorn figure after the match.

"I'm very sad to watch our performance," said the Korean. "Do you think our guys are all good players? I don't think so. When they do their best, then we can acknowledge that they play well. Tonight, how can we say they are good players?

"They should look in the mirror and hopefully will not feel too over-confident of themselves."

"I want to praise Gombak because even if they have young players, they worked very hard, and did their best. I didn't think we did our best and that's why we have to think about it," he added.
