Police investigate online vice ring

An ongoing police investigation into a suspected online prostitution ring has turned up the apparent involvement of a handful of public servants, after their names were found on a long list of clients.

According to sources, the public servants, mostly from the education and uniformed services, make up only a tenth of a much larger group of clients.

It is understood that among those who allegedly paid for sex is a former police officer and a school principal who resigned in December.

While paying for sex between consenting adults aged 18 and above is not illegal, public soliciting and pimping are against the law. The civil service, however, has a strict code of conduct with regard to actions that may reflect poorly on those in the public service.

Singapore Management University law professor Eugene Tan said: "The image of the civil service has taken a beating, and this also raises questions about the selection process ... It's the right thing to do (to make public the investigations), but it's also something I expect of the Government, and I think they will need to do more explaining."
