NEA officer jailed for corruption

48-year-old Oh Hian Kee, a National Environment Agency (NEA) senior technical officer, was found guilty of getting between $3,000 and $30,000 from Mr Tan Boon Gee, a director of Mincon Engineering, mostly to be lenient in supervising Mincon's works between 2006 and 2009.

Oh was then attached to the mechanical maintenance unit of Tuas South Incineration Plant, and Mincon was one of the contractors.

Mr Tan had testified during the trial that he raised the issue of Oh helping his company get business when they went on trips together.

He said if his business were to get work, he would give Oh 'benefits'.

Oh's defence was that he did not receive the money, and if he did, they were related to soccer bets and not for any work-related purposes.

The maximum penalty for corruption is a $100,000 fine and five years' jail on each charge.

He was sentenced to 36 months' jail and ordered to pay a penalty of $119,700 on Friday.
