Good response to pilot programme on pet ownership

The programmes that are being tried out in Chong Pang constituency on pet ownership and management of strays are enjoying a good response.

The scheme, where residents can register one cat per public flat, is a departure from the Housing and Development Board policy of disallowing cats in its flats.

The momentum is also picking up since a task force, led by the Ministry of National Development (MND), was set up in July to review pet ownership policies.

Law and Foreign Affairs Minister and MP for Nee Soon GRC S Shanmugam said: "People are asking us 'why are you spending so much time with cats and dogs?', but it's not a zero-sum game. There are people who are interested in coming forward to help and we can work with them.

"It doesn't mean it detracts us from doing other things. But we have to bear in mind that in society, there are different interest groups and animal lovers have said: 'well you're not moving fast enough.' So we will do the best that we can."
