An easier time for needy renters

Families facing hardship and a transition in their housing arrangements can look towards a more stable living environment, as the Government announced tweaks to its Interim Rental Housing (IRH) scheme recently.

Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan has outlined three improvements:

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) will ensure that the private operators managing the scheme serve needy Singaporean families first.

HDB will introduce guidelines to ensure better pairing of households to help minimise conflicts. The scheme requires two households to share a flat as this lowers their individual rental costs.

HDB will extend the tenancy period from six months to a year, renewable for up to two years as to reduce the anxiety that families feel, should they need more time to work out a longer-term housing option, adding that those waiting for their new flat or public rental flat can continue to renew their tenancy until their flat is ready.
