Japan to dig site linked to WWII human experiments

TOKYO - JAPAN is starting to excavate the site of a former medical school linked to Unit 731, a germ and biological warfare outfit that may reveal grisly secrets from World War II.

Shadowy experiments conducted by the unit have never been officially acknowledged by the government but have been documented by historians and participants.

It is the first government probe of the Tokyo site, following a former nurse's revelation in 2006 that she helped bury body parts there as American forces began occupying the capital at the end of the war.

They say any human bones or other artifacts will be thoroughly investigated.

The 14-year-old girl from Milan was playing with the dog and met its 40-year-old owner, a father of a six-year-old, in a park in the northern city after skipping class on September 20 last year.

The girl accepted an invitation for coffee but on leaving the cafe, the man grabbed her neck and tried to undress her. At that moment the dog began barking distracting his owner.

The girl managed to flee after hitting him in the groin.

A medical examination confirmed the assault after she reported the incident to the police.

The assailant was identified after a five-month investigation as the girl remembered the dog's name and identified both the animal and the man in police photos.

English FA Cup: Chelsea 1 - 1 Everton (Everton win on penalties)

Sat 19/02/11 Chelsea P 1 - 1 P Everton View events

Hard work the key for Everton victory
Everton boss David Moyes has credited perseverance and team spirit for his side's shock defeat of Chelsea in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Toffees travelled to Stamford Bridge for their fourth-round replay in the midst of a disappointing run in the Premier League, including a 2-0 loss at Bolton Wanderers last weekend that Moyes described as one of the worst performances he had witnessed.

But one week later the manager was singing Everton's praises after they upended the reigning Cup champions 4-3 on penalties, following an extra-time period that saw Leighton Baines cancel out Frank Lampard's goal in the 119th minute.

"Our work-rate was questioned last week and I said the players here normally respond, and they certainly responded today," Moyes told ESPN.

Off-peak car owner fined $130,000 (or 130 days in jail)

IN 2008, Johnson Fok Jun Hong was fined $1,000 for driving his off-peak or weekend car during the restricted period without a valid supplementary licence.

In 2009, he was fined $3,000 for repeating the offence.

A year later, he was at it again - not once, but 26 times. Between April and August last year, his Subaru Impreza had been driven 26 times without the necessary licence.

In December last year, Fok, 30, was fined $5,000 for each of the offences. The total fine was $130,000, which is believed to be one of the largest amounts to be levied against an off-peak car offender. If he cannot pay up, he must serve 130 days in jail. He has filed an appeal.

No govt in Belgium? Let's celebrate!

BRUSSELS: Thousands of Belgians have held street parties and marches to mark a new world record -- for going without a government for 250 days, the longest time ever.

Belgians marked this very dubious achievement with a typical tongue in cheek approach.

The small, north European country is made up of two language groups: the French and Dutch speakers, whose politicians are unable to get along.

In the university city of Ghent for instance, Belgians passed around giant trophies during a street party as the clock struck twelve, signalling that Belgium had officially beaten Iraq for going without a government in the longest time ever.

The current impasse is caused by a political deadlock between the country's French and Flemish speakers.

While it is a serious situation, some Belgians make light of it -- there has been a public striptease with one person taking of their clothes for every day Belgium has been without a government.
