BRUSSELS: Thousands of Belgians have held street parties and marches to mark a new world record -- for going without a government for 250 days, the longest time ever.
Belgians marked this very dubious achievement with a typical tongue in cheek approach.
The small, north European country is made up of two language groups: the French and Dutch speakers, whose politicians are unable to get along.
In the university city of Ghent for instance, Belgians passed around giant trophies during a street party as the clock struck twelve, signalling that Belgium had officially beaten Iraq for going without a government in the longest time ever.
The current impasse is caused by a political deadlock between the country's French and Flemish speakers.
While it is a serious situation, some Belgians make light of it -- there has been a public striptease with one person taking of their clothes for every day Belgium has been without a government.
