What was that again on fare hike to improve cabbies' earnings?

ComfortDelGro fare hikes: Earnings flat or lower, say cabbies
Some ComfortDelGro taxi drivers said passengers avoided taking their cabs on Monday when fare revisions by Singapore's largest taxi operator rolled in.

ComfortDelGro cabby Lee Boon Hong said some customers opted to flag down taxis from other companies instead.

Another ComfortDelGro cabby, a 60-year-old lamented, "When I drove past, they flagged for a cab from another company."

Yet another ComfortDelGro cabby was reported as saying, "I've earned about 50 per cent less today than I normally do. I think it is bad for our company to increase prices because it is affecting our business."

Premier Taxis driver Tan Keow Ling had this to say, "Customers who get into my cabs tell me that they are boycotting the Comfort cabs."

Revised fares hit cabbies' takings
ComfortDelGro taxi drivers reported a drop in daily takings of at least 20 per cent yesterday, the first day the company's revised fares kicked in.

"Even though they see that our cabs are empty, they choose to board those of other companies," said cabby S. L. Chua. "Typically, I could easily make up to 20 trips in a day. But this morning, I had to go around hunting for passengers," he added.

Cabby Teh Kok Wah, 58, said he barely made enough money yesterday to cover the daily rental of his taxi and diesel costs of about $120.

"It is a lose-lose situation for both the passengers and us. They end up having to pay more while we see fewer people taking our cabs," he explained.

Trans-cab cabby H. W. Wong, 58, offered an insight, "When the biggest player increases prices, the passengers assume that all the cabs are charging higher fares and so avoid them altogether."
