Twelve young fencers will take one more step towards achieving their Olympic dream when they join the Singapore Sports School next year.

And they got a head start by sparring with two-time Olympic gold medallist Brice Guyart.

Mr Guyart has been chosen to mentor the first batch of students when they start at the Sports School's Fencing Academy.

Fencing has had its roots in Singapore since 1955, but until recently, has always been a niche sport. There is, however, a growing interest, especially among the youth. And sports officials said it's an area Singaporeans can excel in.

Ralf Bissdorf, head coach of the Fencing Academy at Singapore Sports School, said: "You need a combination of speed, agility, creativity, thinking, and strategy. Singaporeans are very good in adapting to situations... they are normally very creative in finding solutions.

"If I compare Singapore to Germany, the talent pool here is at least as big... It's not a question of talent, the talent is here. Now it's up to us to exploit the talent and go all the way."
